For schools in England

School Website Readiness Checker

Review publicly visible school website information in England and receive a readiness snapshot with possible gaps, manual checks and suggested next actions.

What the checker reviews

The live checker catalogue currently contains 32 checks across six categories. It reviews publicly visible pages, links and documents, then reports evidence found, possible gaps and items that need a manual check. The catalogue follows the actual checks used by the tool; school-type selection determines which maintained-school or academy-specific items apply.

How to use the results

Treat the report as a point-in-time snapshot of information the scanner could reach publicly. Start with high-priority possible gaps, open the evidence link shown for each finding and compare the live page or document with current DfE guidance for your school type. Assign an owner and record the action rather than treating the scan as a pass-or-fail score.

“May need a manual check” means automation could not reach or interpret enough evidence to make a useful first-pass finding. Content may sit in an image, an inaccessible or unclearly named PDF, a JavaScript-only area, or a page blocked from scanning. Check the public journey yourself before deciding that anything is absent.

The checker is a readiness aid. It does not determine whether a school meets every applicable requirement, provide legal advice or predict an inspection outcome. Requirements differ between maintained schools and academies and may change. Confirm the applicable source, the current document and the approval or publication evidence before closing an action.

Who the checker is for

Headteachers can use the snapshot to coordinate follow-up; school business managers can check publication records and funding documents; governance professionals and clerks can connect findings to board evidence; and website leads can verify links, filenames and public navigation.

For a document-led review, use the UK school website compliance checklist. Primary settings can also work through the primary-school website information checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Is the school website checker free?

Yes. The readiness checker is free to run. You can enter a work email to receive a copy of the results, or skip that step and continue without creating an account.

What does it check?

It reviews publicly visible pages and documents against the checker's current catalogue of 32 publication checks across school identity, policies, governance, inspection and performance, funding, and SEND. It reports evidence found, possible gaps and items that need a manual check.

Does it cover DfE requirements for academies as well as maintained schools?

Yes. The checker supports maintained primary schools and academy primary schools in England. It uses the selected school type to handle differences such as charging and remissions for maintained schools and annual reports and accounts for academies. Schools should still confirm the current guidance that applies to them.

Do I need to log in?

No. You do not need an Edvance account or website-admin login. The checker reads only publicly visible pages. The optional email step can be skipped if you do not want a copy of the results sent to you.
